Magnum Photographer <a title=\"Chien chi Chang\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lensculture.com\/articles\/chien-chi-chang-the-chain\">Chien chi Chang&#8217;s<\/a> \u00a0sobering\u00a0photographs of mentally-ill inmates at a Taiwanese chicken farm is showing at <a title=\"NAS Gallery\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nas.edu.au\/experience\/NASGallery\">National Art School Gallery.<\/a>\u00a0 Couples are chained together all day, and supply unpaid labour for the chicken farm endeavour. Hall produces work both humorous and tragic, with a variety of media from Tongan bark cloth through scrounged military camo shirts to deer teeth. \u00a0This exhibition was a bit heavy on the skulls for my taste but there were some beautiful pieces nonetheless.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/moirakirkwood.com\/?attachment_id=2893\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2893\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2893\" alt=\"Cummings-Coffee-Pot-and-pot-plant-coloured-etching-31x29cm-image-51x40cm-sheet-size-ed-25-250x215\" src=\"https:\/\/moirakirkwood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Cummings-Coffee-Pot-and-pot-plant-coloured-etching-31x29cm-image-51x40cm-sheet-size-ed-25-250x215.jpg\" width=\"250\" height=\"215\" srcset=\"https:\/\/moirakirkwood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Cummings-Coffee-Pot-and-pot-plant-coloured-etching-31x29cm-image-51x40cm-sheet-size-ed-25-250x215.jpg 250w, https:\/\/moirakirkwood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Cummings-Coffee-Pot-and-pot-plant-coloured-etching-31x29cm-image-51x40cm-sheet-size-ed-25-250x215-150x129.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Elisabeth Cummings, <em><strong>Coffee pot and pot plant,<\/strong><\/em> 2013, etching, 25 x 25cm<\/p>\n<p>The stand-out winner for me though \u00a0was Elisabeth Cummings&#8217; solo show at <a title=\"King St Gallery on William\" href=\"http:\/\/kingstreetgallery.com.au\/\">King St Gallery on William.<\/a>\u00a0Cummings, who I was lucky enough to have as my teacher back in my TAFE student days, is still powering on producing stunningly beautiful and energetic work, despite being 80. If anything, she continues to improve, which is really saying something. It seems to me that nowadays she allows more &#8216;air&#8217; into her works &#8211; areas of little or no paint, negative spaces that flow around and through the work, giving pieces a certain lightness of touch. These areas act as a necessary foil to dense and sometimes brilliantly coloured areas. The show was mostly monotypes, etchings and painted ceramics (colllaborating with Louise Boscacci). There are also some luscious oil paintings out the back in the office area, and some small gouaches.
